The Dads

Interview: 'Who's your dad?' Sjoerd van Eerdenburg

Sjoerd van Eerdenburg, better known as “Saxy Mr. S” is 33 years of age. The musician (he proudly plays the saxophone) is married to the lovely Jelena van Eerdenburg who is not only his wife but also the mother of their fantastic son Bellamy (2).

What is the first thing you did when you found out you was becoming a dad? And who was the first one you called?

My wife surprised me with the news. I remember it well, because she asked me to stay in the car while she had to go and get something from the store, something that is unusual for her. I stayed in the car and when we came home later that day she said there is a gift for me on the table. When I opened the gift, I saw baby socks and the pregnancy test. It totally overwhelmed me and I definitely cried of joy! We kept the news quiet for some time, and I remember telling our parents first. Both moms were overjoyed with the news, for both it would be their first grandchild.

Can you tell us something about how you handle parenting? Are there specific values? What do you teach your children?

I have to say parenting is a bit of a ‘play by ear’ for me. For my wife on the other hand it is sort of embedded in her nature, she does it so well. I admire her skill to really reason with our (quite the handful) energetic son.  I am definitely his play buddy, but his rapid developments and him growing from baby to toddler so quickly taught and forced me to be more strict. I do teach him music and see he really enjoys it. When he was just a baby and did not want to sleep, I would sing to him and he would doze off softly, that gave me the most pure and sincere feeling of being his dad.

How did becoming a father change your life?

It enriched my life! Only days after his birth I could not picture my life without Bellamy in it! Practically, it changed quite a bit though, especially since my work is mostly performing, and thus late hours and in the weekends, I find myself waking up much earlier than I used to. Also travelling with an infant asks for a bit more preparation than we were accustomed to, but we found our way and Bellamy enjoys even the longest flights and handles them like a pro!

Can you describe your personal style? What are your favorite brands? And If you could only take 6 items of your current wardrobe, what would that be?

My style is classic and timeless with a sexy touch ;). At least that is what I try… My favorite brands have been the same for over a decade now and most of my wardrobe is not of a particular brand, but made to measure, bespoke or tailored. I enjoy to shop at Oger and I buy my more flamboyant pieces abroad while traveling. I think I have a similar look for years and years already and my motto: “style is never out of fashion” never let me down. If I could take only 6 items I would take my cashmere grey turtle neck, my blue jeans, my overcoat, watch, green suede Santoni double monk straps and Tom Ford sunglasses.

Do you often juggle with work and being a father?

The great thing about being a musician is that I mostly work at night and therefore we can spend a lot of time as a family. Most of the time I leave when Bellamy is just put to bed, and it really feels fantastic to be able to spend so much time together! In the weekends my wife lets me sleep in so I can get my rest for the night to come.

How are the roles divided between you and your partner?

With my schedule being irregular and rather full I am really grateful that Jelena took extra time off from her career in order to take full care of Bellamy and let me be as flexible as possible. We complete each other in raising Bellamy I believe, and therefore it works well. When our son is sick he tends to turn more to her so while she cares for him I make sure the house is tidy, clean and there is food on the table. We divide the joy and the chores and that makes it pleasant for both of us.

Is there anything in your partner’s wardrobe you really hate?

My wife has great sense of style, so I can say almost everything she buys I like. Most of the time we shop together so I express my opinion when asked ;). Adding to that; we recently moved to our new house, so I made sure the one thing I detested ended up in the bag for hand me downs. It was a beige top with blue stripes, which had no fit whatsoever and was made out of the strangest cotton I have ever seen.

How do you like to see your partner dressed?

I really enjoy the many styles and faces my wife has, but what I really love the most is the rapid transformation she can undergo in 20 minutes. She sits at the table with crayons in her hand and paint all over her face, playing with Bellamy and running late for our date. While transforming in a femme fatale fully sexy in a dress and Louboutins in 20 minutes! I like her as elegant as she is, a classic beauty, from the inside and out, in a dress or in jeans. But most of all I love to wake up next to her without make up, with a ‘coupe de lit’, but all mine!

What is your favorite destination? And if you have the opportunity to pack your bags with your family to move anywhere in the world, where would that be and why?

So difficult! For holidays we love the Maldives, it’s serene and beautiful and Bellamy loves the water and the little baby sharks there. He can spend hours running around with them. I lived in LA and Paris before and I loved both cities equally, but I also really enjoy our current place in Noordwijk. I think for us home is where the heart is, preferably with a little bit of sunshine!

Which gadget cannot be missing (out) in a dad’s life?

I cannot go anywhere with Bellamy without a small collection of toy cars.

Name a dad with style that inspires you.

Ryan Reynolds and David Beckham

What is your ultimate daddy must-have?

Easy, a great mother and wife. I can be a fun dad for Bellamy because of her.

What was the stroller you used for your baby?

We were one of the lucky first ones to get a Mima Xari in rich tan/cognac leather. It really looked like a stroller from the movies and we would get stopped everywhere to ask what type of stroller it was. Bellamy laid in it comfortably as a baby, but the toddler part was rather unpractical and uncomfortable, so we barely used it after his 6th month. Now we use the Maclaren BMW reclining umbrella stroller. We chose it for its lightweight and it has gone everywhere with us. Bellamy slept in it in airports, on beaches and drives it around himself sometimes. It is fantastic!

Name any restaurant in the world which is your favorite and why?

So difficult! We enjoy our regular spots in Noordwijk and Amsterdam but we have had pleasurable experiences and great times in restaurants all over the world. I really admired the wine list (800 pages) and service at L’Assiette Champenoise in Reims, France. Although I cannot remember what we ate. I do want to get back there one day.

What are your favorite holiday destinations with kids?

Maldives, the south of France,  the Caribbean.

What do you do when you are in need of inspiration?

I get most of my creativity from renewed energy and although travelling is tiring sometimes, I tend to believe it recharges my battery and makes me appreciate the things back home.

When you go out with your friends, in which club can we find you?

The great thing about being a musician is that you are always out and about. And although most of my shows are fun, I do have to be there, which makes plans with friends rather difficult. With my friends we have a yearly holiday and we meet up for drinks and dinner. I am also a resident at The Harbour Club, Escape and Millers, so you can find me there.

What’s your favorite drink?

Vodka diet coke and champagne

What is the best place to go to with kids in the weekend?

We do different activities in my weekend, which is during the week. Bellamy enjoys animals so we tend to go to places where he can see and touch them.  He really loved the Dubai Mall Aquarium.

Are you aware of your health? Do you exercise to stay in shape? What are you thoughts on your health?

I do take care of my health, although I should hit the gym a bit more often these days, I must admit. At home we eat healthy and we teach Bellamy to do the same.

What are the three beauty products, which you always have on your bathroom shelf?

I use a Shiseido eye crème and a Biotherm face crème.  I also use Sebastian Crude Clay as a hair product.

What is your favorite city in the world and why?

I really feel at home in Paris, it has culture and classic style and for some reason it suits me.

Is there anything you want to do or accomplish?

I would like to become a father once more and spend as much quality time with my family as possible.

Name 3 things on your bucket list?

  1. Become a father once more 2. Teach my son to play an instrument well 3. Learn how to play the piano.

What is your favorite family car and why?

My wife drives a BMW X6, it fits all the stuff we need to take with us and then some, and I like the sporty touch to it.

Where do we see you in 10 years?

Older, hopefully a little wiser and together with my family.

Any tips for new dads?

Have patience and take care of the mother of your child, it is really the most underrated job in the world!

The Dad I would like to suggest for the next “Who is your dad” is:
